Shore Dives
• Mermaid
A 9 ft bronze statue of a mermaid that was created by Simon Morris is located in approx. 50-60ft of water is glistening with sea life. Just a short surface swim to a surface marker you make your way down a descent line to the bottom 50 ft away from the statue. To the west of the statue is a fabulous wall that descends to over 200 ft loaded with cloud sponges and other various marine life. To the southeast is an old wreck that is home to a couple of large lingcod. Some of the life you may encounter is lingcod, various rock fish, nudibranchs, sponges, anemones. There have also been reported sightings of octopi, and wolf eels.
• Malahat
A rum runner from the prohibition era, the Malahat is located off of the southern tip of the Catalyst Paper Mill. This dive can be done as either a shore dive or a boat dive, about a 200 yard surface swim from shore you follow the jetty to almost the end and descend to approx 60’ of water and continue your swim out. The Malahat runs north / south with the stern in about 80’ of water and the bow in about 30’ of water where a plaque is located commemorating it. This dive is guide recommended. Some of the sea life encountered is sea perch, rock fish, large sunfish, lingcod, nudibranch, sea cucumber, and seasonally home to California Sea lions.
• Beach Gardens
A nice relaxing shore entry dive. This dive is ideal for the beginner or those that just want an easy dive. This site is also great for picture taking. It follows the jetty out and descends to about 60’ ft of water. Past the end of the jetty the currents pick up and the bottom drops off. This section is recommended for those with a bit of experience.
• Emmonds Beach
At the end of a road off of highway 101 north of Powell River, lies Magoo rock 100 yards off the shores of Emmonds beach. With a gentle shore entry you do a leisurely surface swim out to the rock which is visible at low tide.
The rock which is fairly large in diameter stretches out to the north and south below the waters surface with varying depths from 35 ft on the shore side to over 100 ft on the outside face of the rock. This area is abundant with sea life with every thing from sea urchins, to scallops, sunfish, and various species of fish, sponges and other invertebrate. This area is prone to the seas blowing up so divers should use discretion when diving this site.
